Visiting the cemetery at Old Salem (God's Acre) is an Easter tradition for Moravians in Winston-Salem. The day before Easter Sunday is especially busy as families clean and put fresh flowers on the graves so that they all look beautiful for the Easter sunrise service. It's a time for reflection and remembrance, but it's also a time of joy and celebration for the children. I have many fond memories of running wild with my cousins all over God's Acre. We helped to wash the graves and fasten down the flowers. When we were old enough to read, we relished visiting the the oldest of the graves and reading the names and dates on them.
Now look, here's my daughter with her hands on my grandfather's gravestone.
Louise with Bronwyn and Elijah. Now it's their turn to work the pump and wash the graves. They work together to pump the water into the flowering can.
